It’s official. I’m a married woman. Kiran took me to select a mangle sutra (literally, marriage thread) yesterday. It’s a gold necklace with small black beads. We both had an idea of what would suit me best — something delicate — and we found it straight away. It makes the people who know us very happy to see me wearing it. More than a symbol of marriage, it’s a symbol that I am embracing part of Indian culture. So I get lots of smiles at friends’ homes, but blank stares from other women on the streets.
